Varennes, Québec

In operation since 2007, our Varennes biorefinery is Québec’s first ethanol plant and a model for water and energy efficiency. The site produces some of the lowest carbon-intensity ethanol in Canada, along with corn oil and distillers grains, and benefits from strong logistics based on its proximity to key fuel and feed customers.

Adjacent to our Varennes biorefinery is SEMECS, one of North America’s largest anaerobic digestion (AD) facilities. Partially owned and operated by Greenfield Global, SEMECS treats 120,000 tons of organic waste from local municipalities each year and turns it into biogas and fertilizers. The Varennes plant uses some of this biogas in its process facilities, reducing reliance on natural gas and shrinking its carbon footprint.
